MEET THE TEAM

Laurie

Fitness and being active have always been a part of my life. Growing up on Shelter Island, I developed a love for nature—exploring the woods and shorelines without the distractions of the internet or video games. Those experiences fostered a deep appreciation for the environment and all living things. I became aware of the vital roles every species plays in the cycles of life and the alarming destruction happening in the world.

What I've learned most from these journeys is that it all starts with yourself. Understanding your capabilities, needs, and mindset is powerful, and staying active and connected to the outdoors has shaped who I am. Over the years, I’ve traveled to places like Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Montana, Alaska, and back to Shelter Island, living a simple life focused on health and happiness. Along the way, my two beautiful daughters have become an essential part of my journey.

The idea of opening a fitness and wellness center had been on my daughter Callie’s mind for years. Before COVID, she dreamed of creating a community-focused space that would help people improve their lives and the world. We loved the idea of becoming B Corp certified, supporting both people and the planet. After COVID shifted our plans, we found a small space and began working on turning the vision into reality, starting with fitness and eventually adding yoga and wellness offerings.

While visiting family in Montana, I decided to help Callie by becoming a Certified Personal Trainer, and she recommended NASM for courses. Meanwhile, we focused on branding, naming, and building the studio. Callie suggested the name “SOZO,” which means salvation in Greek—“to save, heal, make whole, deliver”—and it felt like a perfect fit. After months of design work, SOZO came to life.

We opened the studio in January 2025, and I passed my national exam in May. It’s been a long journey, and I’m so excited to help bring Callie’s dream to life.

Live life and grow!
